Chapter 11

After concealing the dummy in Alice’s bedroom, we raced to Henrietta’s room. I checked my watch. It was still early; Henrietta was probably asleep.

Alice rounded the corner in front of me. She stopped so fast that I bashed into her.

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

She backed away and turned to me. “There’s a guard outside Henrietta’s bedroom.”

“That must be Campbell’s doing,” I said. “He must be worried Henrietta might make a run for it.”

“We have to get in and see her,” Alice said. “When you get to know her, you’ll realize she couldn’t possibly be a killer. Although I suppose if someone tried to steal her favorite book she might club them over the head with it. That wasn’t how Blaine was killed, so we don’t need to worry about that.”

“I’ll be on the lookout for any dangerous book shaped weapons lying around when I get in there.” I peered around the corner. “How do you suggest we do that with a guard blocking our way?”

“You leave that to me.” She fluffed up her blonde hair and pouted. “I’m sure the charming guard outside the door won’t be able to ignore my pleas for help. What man can resist a damsel in distress?”

“What are you going to say you need help with?”

She chewed on her bottom lip for a few seconds. “I could tell him I’m lost.”

“You live in this castle.”

“It’s a big place. There are a lot of rooms that all look the same.” She peeped around the corner. “I’ve got it. I heard a strange noise in my bedroom. I’m worried there’s an intruder in the castle.”

“That might bring a whole security team to investigate. We want no guards, not a small army to deal with.”

“How about I saw a stranger in the grounds? I could say I was worried about my safety. I’ll insist the guard investigates.”

“That could work. All I need is ten minutes with Henrietta,” I said.

“Let’s try that.” Alice pulled out her phone. “I’ll message Henrietta so she knows you’re not some ax murderer creeping in to lop her head off.”

“Good thinking. I don’t want any book related injuries when I surprise her with an early morning wake up call.”

Alice grinned as she tucked her phone away. “Wish me luck.” She turned and hurried along the corridor toward the guard.

I peeked around the corner with Meatball. Alice approached the guard and pointed out the windows. I could just detect the frantic tone of her voice.

Within a few seconds, she’d dragged the guard away, along the corridor and out of sight.

Once they were gone, I made my move. I dashed along the corridor with Meatball and snuck open Henrietta’s bedroom door.

The curtains were shut, so it was gloomy inside the room, but I could make out someone lying on the bed. I hurried to a window and pulled open the curtains.

“I don’t want to be disturbed,” a sleepy voice came from the bed.

“I’m really sorry to interrupt your sleep, Princess Henrietta,” I said. “Alice sent me.
